Running

Wanna know how I started running?

I put one foot in front of the other and ran.

I couldn’t run to the end of the street when I first started. But I was determined to learn how to run. I started out running to burn a few calories but its become so much more. I run because I’m happy, because I’m sad, because I’m excited and because I’m frustrated. I run to train (my first 26.2 right now!) and I run for fun.

I got down to my goal weight (140 lbs, I’m 5’4) with 4 rounds of Whole30 and then decided to start working out. I started with HITT training and found upper and lower body workouts on Pinterest. I then started walking a lot and running a little. Each time I went out I would make myself run a little further.

When talking about long distance running I once had someone tell me- once you can run three miles without stopping you can train to run just about anything. And it’s true! Once I hit the three mile mark I was able to slowly add milage and build up to my longest run yet- 19 miles. Are you interested in training for a 5k, 10k, half, or full marathon? I would encourage you to Google and find a training program that works for you.

As for what I eat while training- I eat like i’ve been eating since I finished my last round of Whole30- mostly clean foods (meats, veggies, fruits, potatoes, nuts and eggs) and l allow myself the occasional treat. Right now I fuel with Honey Stinger Gels (They don’t pay me to talk about them. They probably don’t know I exist.) about every 4 miles and bring a water backpack when running more than about 8 miles or when I’m running during the summer. I’ve recently joined Anytime Fitness and am excited about the break from the heat.

I get asked often what running gear I wear. We’ll start at the top and work our way down… I wear headbands year round. So. Much. Sweat. And, I make these. I may just make a few to sell one day. We’ll see. I often have to run with a headlamp because I run super early before my kids wake up. I don’t use anything fancy. This is the one I have. I used to use regular ol headphones but then I got a pair of Bluetooth headphones for Christmas and they pretty much blew my mind. I wear these. Most of my shirts are from previous runs, Walmart, Academy and Target. And usually on sale. My shorts are Dona Jo Fitwear and I cannot say enough about this company. Their products are soft and vibrant colored and their customer service is top notch. {Their shorts are sized 1, 2, 3. I wear a size 2 and am usually about a size 8 in regular clothes.} My legs will probably always rub together when I run {sorry, TMI} so I need something that isn’t going to creep up or chafe. And these shorts have been the best for summer running- no chafing. No creeping up. And they’re breathable. I even wore these for my marathon and had zero issues. I’m a FAN. I am an ambassador for CEP compression but they don’t pay cash to talk about them. They sent product over to test out and I LOVE their stuff. When you see me with sleeves on my legs in photos, they’re CEP brand. Last, but certainly not least, I run in Altra Running shoes. Fantastic company with a great product. I have the Torin 2.0 but my Torin 2.5’s should be arriving any day now. I CAN’T WAIT. Good shoes are super important. My first big running investment was a good pair of shoes. My body thanked me.

Congrats if you made it this far! There’s a bunch of information on there.
